Hivos is an international human rights and social justice organization founded in 1968 and guided by humanist values. It works to strengthen and fund civil society organizations, social movements, and human rights defenders that promote equality, justice, and democratic participation.
Hivos focuses on supporting groups and communities that face discrimination, exclusion, or threats because of their efforts to drive social and political change. The organization operates across the Americas, Africa, Europe, and Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA), collaborating with local partners to expand civic space and protect fundamental rights.
Its vision is a world where all people can live with dignity, freedom, equal opportunities, and the ability to shape decisions that affect their lives and communities. Its mission is to defend and expand civil and political rights so that marginalized communities and social movements can achieve greater equality and justice.
Hivos is guided by four core values: humanism, equity and inclusion, solidarity and collective care, and courage. These values shape its commitment to respecting diversity, promoting fairness, building genuine partnerships, and supporting those who take risks to defend human rights.
The organization provides funding, capacity building, knowledge sharing, advocacy support, and access to networks and institutions. It works closely with civil society organizations, independent media, community groups, activists, and youth-led initiatives to strengthen their impact and resilience.
Key areas of focus include democracy and civic participation, human rights, social inclusion, LGBTQI+ empowerment, youth engagement, urban governance, and social justice. Through its programs and partnerships, Hivos aims to create more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable societies.
